Join us as we celebrate 100 years of library service in Redford Township! This year marks a century of connecting our community with knowledge, stories, and each other. From humble beginnings with bookmobiles to our vibrant modern library, we’ve grown alongside Redford, and we’re excited to celebrate this milestone with you.
A Journey Through Time – Our Library’s History
Our story began in the 1920s…

1920s | Library service begins with bookmobiles; housed in McCylley Laundry. |
1925 | Library housed in George E. Currie’s building. |
1945 | First Library Board appointed. |
March 1949 | Library moves to Five Mile Road. |
March 1956 | Library moves to a larger building across from Township Offices. |
July 1961 | Groundbreaking for new library building. |
May 20, 1962 | Redford Township Public Library dedicated. |
June 7, 1962 | First Friends of the Library meeting. |
1966 | Library building addition completed. |
1992 | Library renovations. |
May 1994 | District library formed. |
August 1994 | Citizens of Redford vote to fund the library with a 1 mil operating fund. |
June 2002 | Presbyterian Village of Redford offers land for a new library building. |
May 28, 2003 | Groundbreaking ceremony for the new library building on 6 mile. |
August 23, 2004 | The new Redford Township District Library opens its doors. |
September 19, 2004 | The new library is dedicated to the citizens of Redford. |

The Frances Carpenter Endowment was created. A former Library employee who went back to college in her seventies, Frances was an inspiration, and a true Library champion.

August 23, 2014 | The library celebrates its 10th anniversary on 6 mile. |
April 1, 2019 | The library went fine free! |
June 2, 2022 |
Ribbon cutting to celebrate new drive through and outdoor patio.

August 2, 2022 | Millage was passed to continue funding and create new youth space. |
September 11, 2023 | Construction started |
August 24,2024 | Grand reopening party and 20 years on 6 mile celebration |
August 23, 2025 | Celebrating 100 years of library service in Redford |
